SWTV Year In Review

This has been quite a year! To mark the end of 2011, I’ve compiled month-by-month highlights from this website.

Click through for a look back at a six-alarm fire, Reggie Bush’s pre-game song selection, Super Bowl bling, Grand Isle coverage, the Mobile Leprechaun in the spotlight, behind-the-scenes video, The Special Man, sports anchor Scott, my interviews with Gov. Scott Walker and Al Scramuzza…and more.

Thanks for visiting my website, following along on Facebook and Twitter and watching WDSU News this year.

Here’s hoping that 2012 will be another great year.

The View from the Press Box

This is the view from the WDSU seats in the press box, the true nosebleed seats in the Superdome. You can’t get much higher than this.

The press box was relocated following the 2009 season to make room for more suites in the Plaza level. You can’t argue with the logic in that — the media, after all, are getting in free AND freeloading food and drinks. Still, when the press box was at the top of the Plaza it offered the best seats in the house.

I shot this video of Deuce McAllister’s introduction before the 2009 playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals from the old press box…in the good ol’ days.

Lost and Found

I’ve been helping my parents get settled into their new house the past couple of weeks and along the way have rediscovered some long-lost childhood items…including this. I wore that orange sash with pride as I kept the students of St. Angela Merici safe. I was a crossing guard. Don’t be jealous.

Enjoy a happy and safe night.

Jazz Half Marathon and 5K

What a great morning downtown on Saturday. ‘Team 6′ participated in the Third Annual Jazz Half Marathon 7 5K benefiting the Cancer Program at Children’s Hospital. ‘Team 6′ was comprised of 44 WDSU employees, including our general manager, Joel Vilmenay, who spearheaded the effort. All of us competed in the 5K, with the exception of reporter Heath Allen who ran the half. Showoff.

WDSU also broadcast the event, pre-and post race, from 6-10 a.m. Approximately 2,500 runners participated this year.

WDSU is very involved with Children’s Hospital and the race is a great opportunity to raise a lot of money. Last year we helped raise nearly $150,000 for Children’s. This year’s total should eclipse that number.

I finished the 5K with a personal best, which didn’t take much. I placed 39th among men with a time of 28:34:6.

Viewer Photoshop Fun

Our main studio is undergoing a top secret upgrade this weekend, so we used the virtual set in Studio B last night at 6 & 10. I tweeted a picture of our setup and a viewer (@ianhoch) had some fun with Photoshop. Extra points for creativity!

Photo: Caught on Camera During Weather

During yesterday’s 4 p.m. news we aired a story on newscast bloopers. Of course, one of the bloopers showed people walking in front of cameras who weren’t supposed to be there. Well, guess who accidentally created a blooper of his own right after that story aired? Yep.

I was on the wrong side of the studio for my next shot and the producer got in my ear and told me to move. So I bolted across the studio while Margaret wasn’t on camera…until I got right in front of her. Then, of course, she wrapped her weather and appeared on-camera with me buzzing through her shot.

You’d think I did it on purpose, considering the story that aired right before her weather hit. But no, it was just me being a dope.

Where’s Scott?

WDSU sports anchor Fletcher Mackel and Chief Meteorologist Margaret Orr sent me this picture tonight commemorating my absence. I’ve been out sick two days and I’m hoping against a third tomorrow. This summer cold is brutal.
