[Video] Super Bowl XLVII: Behind the Scenes As the Lights Went Out

It’s amazing how calm everyone stayed in the heat of the moment. Doug Thornton, executive vice president of SMG, the company that manages the Superdome on behalf of the state, was noticeably concerned though. “Frank, we lost the A feed.” He then swallows hard.

Joint Statement from Entergy, SMG Regarding Superdome Power Outage

Media release: Shortly after the beginning of the second half of the Super Bowl in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, a piece of equipment that is designed to monitor electrical load sensed an abnormality in the system. Once the issue was detected, the sensing equipment operated as designed and opened a breaker, causing power to be […]

CBS Uses Old Superdome Photo for Super Bowl XLVII Promo

Screen Shot 2013-01-25 at 9.17.52 AM

Come on, CBS. The Superdome has been wearing its beautiful new skin for nearly THREE YEARS. I took the above screen capture from a promo for ‘The Talk’ that’s airing now, previewing live shows here all next week in Jackson Square. And this is the shot they use. The Superdome obviously looks much better now, […]

Superdome Panorama

This is my first panoramic shot on the iPhone 5. It was the best thing to come out of the Superdome today.

The View from the Press Box

This is the view from the WDSU seats in the press box, the true nosebleed seats in the Superdome. You can’t get much higher than this. The press box was relocated following the 2009 season to make room for more suites in the Plaza level. You can’t argue with the logic in that — the […]

A Wild Few Weeks

20111024-094958.jpg

Those who follow the local sports scene might find it difficult to take a breath these days. I can’t remember a time when so many captivating storylines were happening concurrently. The NBA lockout continues. No one knows when the Hornets will play in the Arena again. LSU players Tyrann Mathieu, Spencer Ware and Tharold Simon […]

[VIDEO] The Superdome in Lights

Saints owner Tom Benson, along with Superdome officials, debuted a new $1.6 million dollar LED exterior lighting system Thursday night. It is the largest installation of its kind in the U.S. and includes five miles of copper wiring. It’s pretty energy-efficient, too — using roughly the same amount of energy it takes to power a […]

Five Years Later: The Superdome Reopens

dome

The Louisiana Superdome reopened five years ago today. Entering the game, the Saints and Falcons were both 2-0. The buildup to the game was unprecedented. But the Saints pounding the Falcons 23-3 before a frenzied sellout crowd was merely a footnote in this unbelievable story of resilience. After Steve Gleason blocked that punt and set […]

The Superdome’s New Skin

superdome

This is how the Superdome’s exterior renovation looks so far. I shot this picture earlier today. The job is less than halfway complete, but when it’s done it will look incredible. This picture doesn’t really do it justice. The new gold exterior is striking.

NFC Championship Sights and Sounds

I posted more videos from Sunday on my YouTube channel.

Vikings/Saints in NFC Title Game

vikes

The NFC Championship game is set. By thumping the Dallas Cowboys 34-3, the Minnesota Vikings earned a trip to the Superdome on Sunday. Kickoff is 5:40 p.m. Here’s a nugget tweeted out by the NFL: Favre’s 1st career game against Saints-11/14/93. Pack wins, 19-17 @ Superdome. 18 of 32, 150 yards, 1 TD pass.

Sunday Morning Saints Wrap

Tim Hightower broke free for 70 yards on the game’s first play. He ran five times for 17 yards the rest of the way. Almost immediately after the lightning-fast 7-0 deficit made the 70,149 in the Dome groan in disbelief  and the press box media shift a bit in their seats, the Saints dismantled the […]

Saints Will Host Cardinals

kurt-warner

I was about to turn the game off when the Cardinals were up 31-10. Good thing I didn’t. I would have missed the highest-scoring game in NFL postseason history. Thanks to a thrilling 51-45 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers, Arizona is bringing quarterback Kurt Warner and his high-octane offense to the Superdome next […]

Premature Celebration

Classic video. Saints owner Tom Benson thought kicker Garrett Hartley made a 37-yard field goal to give the Saints a win and clinch home field advantage. For a moment, jubilation filled his Superdome suite. Then the next moment came. (via Blog of New Orleans)
