Oil Spill: 42,000 Gallons a Day

Turns out that Deepwater Horizon oil rig is leaking quite a bit of oil after all. The Coast Guard says as much as 1,000 barrels of oil a day, or 42,000 gallons, is pouring out of the well the sunken rig was trying to cap off at the time of the explosion. The rainbow-colored sheen of oil stretched 20 miles by 20 miles on Saturday – about 25 times larger than it appeared to be a day earlier.

And as if the Coast Guard isn’t busy enough, a tank barge exploded on the Mississippi River yesterday afternoon.
