Grand Isle: Saints Brighten the Day

Saints coach Sean Payton signing autographs in Grand Isle.

Grand Isle, LA — We spent another day here and got a lot done. We have some really good stories to air over the next three days during WDSU News at 4, 5 and 6. Our base of operations will be the Bridge Side Marina. Stop by and see us if you’re in the neighborhood.

Today Saints head coach Sean Payton, the Lombardi Trophy and several players visited Plaquemines Parish to talk with those affected by the BP oil disaster. After spending some time in Buras, Payton, running back Reggie Bush and linebacker Jonathan Vilma climbed aboard a helicopter and made the short trip here. They landed in a baseball field adjacent to the Grand Isle Community Center, met with several local officials then walked over to the Community Center where hundreds of fans had been waiting an hour or more.

With the smell of Grand Isle boiled shrimp in every corner (BP bought the shrimp for the gathering), Payton stood atop a table and addressed the masses (video below). Reggie Bush also spoke for a couple of minutes. After all the formalities were done, Payton and the players signed as many autographs as they could before leaving. They were there about an hour and they made a difference. I talked to ESPN’s Ed Werder who spent the day with Payton and the players. He said he’s never been around a team that means so much to the community and vice versa. It’s well documented that what the Saints and their fans have is something special. Today reinforced that. The people of Grand Isle are suffering and, for a little while, they got to take a much-needed break from reality.

You can watch my interviews with Sean Payton, Reggie Bush and Ed Werder tomorrow on WDSU News live from Grand Isle.
