SWTV Year In Review

This has been quite a year! To mark the end of 2011, I’ve compiled month-by-month highlights from this website.

Here’s hoping that 2012 will be another great year.

January:

7th – Fellowship Baptist Church on Prytania St. erupted into a six-alarm fire. More than 100 New Orleans firefighters responded. I was live at the scene during our 10 p.m. newscast. We captured incredible video of the front of the church collapsing.

11th – Former Saints running back Reggie Bush revealed to me that he gets pumped up before games by listening to Phil Collins.

13th – Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards was released from federal prison after serving more than  8 1/2 years.

22nd – I got to try on former Saint Mike McKenzie’s Super Bowl ring.

February:

3rd – I got some wacky viewer mail.

7th – Former UNO baseball coach Tom Walter donated a kidney.

15th – I returned to Grand Isle, 10 months after the BP oil spill.

18th – I began anchoring sports again…on a fill-in basis.

23rd – I reported on a woman who claimed to have recorded child abuse at her son’s daycare.

28th – The Mobile Leprechaun story landed squarely in the spotlight. Again.

March:

8thFat Tuesday.

17th – St. Patrick’s Day, the Mobile Leprechaun’s yearly coming-out party.

31st – I launched my WDSU Facebook page.

April: 

10th – I shot and edited a series of behind-the-scenes videos with my iPhone.

20th – We covered the first anniversary of the BP oil spill from Grand Isle.

May:

2nd – I looked at social media’s impact on the coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden.

6th – I dropped a “boom goes the dynamite” into a sportscast.

10th-15th – The rising Mississippi River.

17th – A robotic studio camera revealed on live TV it has a mind of its own rogue.

June:

2nd – ‘The Special Man’ went national.

20th – The Times-Picayune printed a great Father’s Day article featuring my dad and me.

30th – Behind-the-scenes at our Hurricane season backup broadcast site — Southern University in Baton Rouge.

July:

14th & 20th – Behind-the-scenes video before the 10 p.m. newscast…here and here.

26th – The Mobile Leprechaun “web investigation” on Tosh.0.

August:

12th – A spelling disaster.

22nd – New Orleans city councilman Arnie Fielkow resigned.

22nd – WDSU News at 4, 5 & 6 finished #1 in the 25-54 key demo, dethroning WWL for the first time in generations.

29th – Former Saints coach Jim Mora tells me that cutting Saints kicker Morten Andersen was a big mistake.

September:

10th – WDSU’s coverage of the Saints’ season opener in Green Bay, my one-on-one interview with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and a bunch of photos from our week on the road.

19thWorld’s biggest Afro.

24th – Controversy brews over WDSU’s new promo proclaiming the station “Louisiana’s NEW News Leader.”

25th – The five-year anniversary of the re-opening of the Superdome.

30th – Actor John Goodman visited WDSU. Here’s the interesting interview.

October:

8th – A viewer had some photoshop fun with pictures of me in front of the green wall of our virtual set.

21st – The Mercedes-Benz Superdome debuts its new $1.6 million exterior LED lighting system.

22nd – WDSU News at 4 producer, Marcy, reveals her favorite anchor.

24th – Looking back on a wild few weeks.

30th – ‘Team 6’ participated in the Children’s Hospital Jazz 5k.

November:

15th – Zombie-proof house. This place is cool.

19th – Catching up with Al Scramuzza, Seafood City’s crawfish king. Contrary to some reports, he is still alive.

28th – San Diego Chargers’ kicker caught on camera relieving himself on the sideline.

29th – The view from the Superdome press box

30th – Fire alarm interrupts ‘NBC Nightly News’ broadcast.

December:

5th – ‘Saints on 6’ reeled in huge ratings.

9th – ‘Felix the Cat’ invaded WDSU News at 4 as I “sing” the theme song.

9th – A wrap-up of the November sweeps period. WDSU showed year-to-year growth in newscasts at 5 a.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. WDSU News at 4 registered a 4.6 rating, up more than a full point from last November.

13th – I looked at the Saints’ remarkable run since 2006 under Sean Payton and Drew Brees.

18th – My super-fast video recap of the Saints dismantling of the Vikings.

23rd – Changes in NOLA TV. Layoffs at WGNO; a retirement at WWL.
