Jerry Romig, the voice of the New Orleans Saints for 44 years, died on Wednesday at the age of 86.

In a statement released by the Saints, team owner Tom Benson said, “Jerry Romig was part of our team, part of our family. One of my favorite days was putting a Super Bowl ring on his finger.”

Mark Romig, Jerry’s son who took over for him as the Superdome public address announcer in 2013, posted on Facebook Wednesday night, “The greatest man I know. Jerry Romig is the best.”

No one will argue with that.

ESPN anchor Stan Verrett, formerly of WDSU, paid tribute to Romig on Twitter, along with many others.

Before Super Bowl XLVII was played in New Orleans on February 3, 2013, I caught up with Romig at his home in River Ridge and talked to him about his career, the future and how he would like to be remembered.
