At the annual Louisiana Association of Broadcasters awards luncheon in Baton Rouge today, WDSU picked up two awards. The station was named best in “Breaking News” for its coverage of last year’s Baton Rouge police shootings and was awarded “Best Documentary” for Steve Gleason: The Journey.
First, the breaking news award. Winning that award means we performed an important public service that day. It wasn’t fun and it wasn’t easy. But we did our job. We go through the normal days to get to the ones that really mean something… when people depend on us. I was very proud of our team’s work that long Sunday.
The documentary award means a lot to me because of the incredible amount of work that went into it and the subject matter. Telling Steve Gleason’s story the way WDSU chief photographer Megan Mackel and I have told it for the past couple of years — especially the trek to Sundance — is what I’m most proud of in my career (even more than introducing the Mobile Leprechaun video).
Here’s a link to the documentary, which aired in March 2016. I wrote it, but Megan brought it to life with her masterful shooting and editing.
